"Russian Railways (RR)" are going to optimize basic infrastructure services of own IT landscape. The corresponding tender with the initial cost of 77.3 million rubles is announced on May 31, 2017.[1]

The Russian Railway optimizes an IT landscape for 77 million rubles

Within the project the railway carrier is going to create a single system of interaction of different IT solutions. It will have to provide authentication of users and computers of network, to automate processes of management of workstations, to monitor failures in work of software products. Also the functionality of the centralized deployment of operating systems, applications and updates should be implemented.

Besides, users of the Russian Railway should have an opportunity of safe and controlled exchange of electronic messages in the organization and with external clients and also sharing of the general means of collective work and interaction (shared folders, address directories, calendars, the scheduler, etc.). In addition it is required to provide functionality of personal audio-and video conferences from automated workplaces of users.

The system created within the project at the first stage should provide with basic infrastructure services up to 10 thousand office staff of the Russian Railway. At the same time, the contractor of the project will need to provide a possibility of further scaling to 300 thousand employees.

The Russian Railway is going to optimize basic infrastructure services of an IT landscape of the company, in particular its such elements as the corporate MS AD metadirectory, corporate mail, the system of fast communications, etc. Project implementation will allow to create a single system of interaction of the different IT solutions existing in the company, to reduce costs for maintenance of jobs and also to reduce risks of unauthorized access to IT systems, - told TAdviser in the press service of the Russian Railway.

The results of the tender will be summed up on July 4, 2017.

The Russian Railway has the difficult and developed IT infrastructure distributed across the territory of the whole country and connecting it a data network. In less detail the organization structure of the Russian Railway includes Central office and 16 railroads (branches of the company).

The main part of users and the automated workplace of each railroad concentrates mainly in the cities with large railway junctions and the regional centers of corporate management: on 1500-3000 users are concentrated in the large cities of the respective region, on 300-500 - in other points and to single automated workplaces on small platforms.

In Russian Railway branches the exterritorial model of administration of IT infrastructure is used. The central office is serviced by a branch-off group of administrators.

In the company the high heterogeneity of operating systems of Windows is observed: there are copies working at versions Windows 2000 XP Vista 7, 8\8.1 and 10. About a half of the computer park of the Russian Railway works at outdated versions of Windows OS and uses outdated MS of Office, follows from the tender documentation.

As file service are used the file servers based on different versions of OS Windows Server Novell NetWare, Red Hat/CentOS with the set FTP and NFS services, in borders of some branches the distributed file system of DFS is used.

The mail systems of the Russian Railway - diverse and independent. In Central office it is implemented on Exchange Server 2003, in branches - based on CommuniGate Pro 6.1.2.

The Russian Railway widely uses technologies of virtualization and terminal access based on software of VMware and Citrix respectively.

The replaceable personnel therefore one workplace can be used to 6 users work at a part of computers.
