Spondylodesis implants (global market)

Spondylodesis is a surgical operation aimed at correcting the spinal column. In this operation, two or (less often) three adjacent vertebrae are connected to each other using screws, rods and a bone implant. This method is used in the treatment of any injuries and curvatures of the spine, in particular scoliosis, degeneration of the intervertebral discs, herniation of the intervertebral discs and pathology of the spine due to a tumor or infection.

2024: Global sales of spondylodesis implants rose 4.6% year over year to $7.32 billion

In 2024, the global market for implants for spondylodesis reached $7.32 billion. For comparison, a year earlier, sales of such products were estimated at about $7 billion. Thus, an increase of 4.6% was noted. Such data are presented in a study by Grand View Research, the results of which Zdrav.Expert reviewed at the end of June 2025.

Spondylodesis is surgery to create stiffness in the affected spine. The operation is aimed at immobilizing adjacent vertebrae by splicing them. One of the indications for the procedure is spondylolisthesis - this is a pathological condition associated with instability of the spine against the background of excessive mobility of the vertebrae. Shifting relative to each other in the anterior or posterior direction, the vertebrae can exert pressure on the nerve fibers, causing pain. In this case, the installation of special implants allows you to return the vertebrae to their original position and fix them: the spine is immobilized using a combination of special screws and small connecting rods. Spondylodesis is also performed in spinal stenosis, scoliosis, spinal fractures and injuries, and in a number of other cases.

One of the drivers of the market, the authors of the study name the growing prevalence of degenerative diseases of the intervertebral discs. In addition, there is an increase in the elderly population, which is more susceptible to diseases associated with the spine. At the same time, there is an increase in the number of operations on the spine due to factors related to lifestyle, accidents and injuries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), annually up to 500 thousand people receive a spinal injury of one degree or another. The probability of premature death of persons who have suffered a spinal injury is 2-5 times higher. Up to 90% of spinal injuries are caused by traumatic causes such as road accidents, falls and violence.

Technological advances have a positive impact on the market under study. Many medical device manufacturers are focused on developing new models of surgical robots that can be used in spinal fusion surgeries. In addition, the design of the implants themselves is improved. The demand for minimally invasive surgical procedures increases, which minimize risks and reduce the recovery time of patients.

Geographically, the spondylodesis implant market was dominated by North America in 2023 with 42% of global revenue. By type of surgery, the industry is segmented into minimally invasive interventions and open surgery. The first of these areas accounted for 69.4% of income. At the same time, products for the treatment of degenerative diseases of intervertebral discs provided the largest share of revenue - 42.1%. The major players on a global scale are:

Analysts at Grand View Research believe that in the future, the CAGR in the market under consideration will be about 4.9%. Thus, by 2030, sales of implants for spondylodesis may increase to $9.75 billion.[1]

2015: Volume of $5.9 billion

In 2015, the market for devices for spondylodesis amounted to $5.867 billion, according to data from the analytical company Allied Market Research.

The dynamics compared to 2014 is not given in the message. At the same time, it is predicted that by 2022 the market in question will grow by 3.4% per year and reach $7.435 billion by the end of this period.

Implant for spondylodesis

In 2015, most of the sales of implants used as a spinal corrector came from North America. Analysts expect the leadership of the region in subsequent years.

Approximately 40% of the European market for devices for spondylodesis in 2015 was occupied by France and Germany. The highest growth rate (4.6% per year) is expected in the Asia-Pacific region due to improved health infrastructure and increased medical costs in developing countries such as India and China.

As for the segments from a technological point of view, the lion's share was made up of solutions for thoracolumbal spondylodesis.

The following companies are named the largest manufacturers of tools for spondylodesis by Allied Market Research analysts (listed alphabetically):
