Kubic is the platform for deployment of the CaaS systems (Container as a Service) providing infrastructure and API for applications launch in the isolated containers.

On June 21, 2017 the SUSE company announced creation of infrastructure and Kubic technology. Within this project the initiative of creation of the platform for service of providing infrastructure and API, applications launch in the isolated containers - CaaS (Container as a Service) develops.

In May, 2017 SUSE together with developers of the openSUSE distribution kit announced the Kubic project. With development of the project and a series of developments of the company issued the CaaS platform for the enterprises. Took the SUSE Enterprise Linux Server (SLES) distribution kit[1] as a basis of the SUSE CaaS-platform [1].

As a part of the CaaS-platform several components:

  • Linux system SUSE MicroOS is a lightweight distribution kit from the SLES 12 SP2 components. The platform is intended for work with LXC and Docker containers, i.e. with basic technologies of containerization. And to managements of these components developers applied the system of centralized operation to installation by the Salt configuration.
  • the platform of the orchestration of the isolated containers Kubernetes. It allows to start containers on a set of hosts, to scale and execute balancing. Start of Kubernetes on nodes is executed in the virtual machines turned based on libvirt or OpenStack. A system supports start of the containers prepared by means of the Docker or LXC tools. In addition to SUSE the platform of the orchestration Kubernetes is used by Red Hat and CoreOS.

Features of SUSE CaaS

  • as a part of the Kubernetes platform and other tools of a corporate class, they will simplify deployment of failsafe container services, will improve portability and will provide reliable computing environment. Positioned by the developer as the "turnkey" ready platform, it is aimed at the accelerated deployment of container environments and saving of time of the customer;
  • automation of tasks of management of deployment and full support of lifecycle of applications of containers, including the built-in tool kit for their balancing, means for creation of images of containers, their interaction, safe updating. There is an access to the entrusted images from SUSE Registry;
  • SaltStack DevOps-program for application lifecycle management.
