2019: Obtaining the certificate of VMware vSAN 6.7 for a series of corporate SSD PM5

On March 20, 2019 the Toshiba Memory Europe company announced receiving certification of VMware vSAN 6.7 for a series of corporate SSD PM5 with the interface of SAS and support of speed to 12gbit/with that it will allow to share these data storage devices with the connected hosts as a part of VMware vSphere clusters. Thanks to certification of vSAN 6.7 users will be able to integrate SSD of PM5 series in the uniform distributed shared data warehouses. It gives the chance to users to set necessary characteristics of storage (for example, performance, capacity and availability) for each connected virtual machine (VM) as a part of a cluster of VMware of vSAN. Such opportunities not only expand options of application of hyper convergent infrastructure (HCI) in virtual environments, but also provide administration and service the politician of storages in PM5 series devices with full compatibility with the vSAN platform, claim in Toshiba.

According to the statement of the developer, certification of PM5 series allows to implement support of VMware of vSAN for the hybrid and using only a flash carriers configurations with two-level architecture (level of storage and level of caching). All write operations are transferred to the level of caching and afterwards are transferred to storage level. At deployment of SSD of PM5 series in a hybrid configuration its level of caching is used and as a reading cache, and as a write cache with preserving of hot data for performance improvement. In the configuration which is completely consisting from a flash carriers 100protsentov the level of caching it is used as a write buffer. Thanks to advantages of multilevel data storage of SSD PM5 series are capable to meet strict requirements both corporate clients, and owners of data processing centers.

2017: The announcement of the TMC PM5 series with the interface of SAS and CM5 with the NVM Express interface

On August 16, 2017 the Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH company provided development of two flagman technologies in the field of corporate solid-state disks (SSD): the TMC PM5 series with the interface of SAS of 12 Gbps and CM5 series with the NVM Express (NVMe) interface.

Both series of products are executed on the basis of 64-layer a flash memory of TMC of a corporate class of BiCS FLASH with placement of three data bits in one cell (three-level cells, TLC).

PM5 series

The TMC PM5 series is provided by disks with a capacity up to 30.72 TB in a form factor 2.5 inches. The full range of long-lasting and capacious SSD disks with the interface of SAS is offered.

PM5 series on the basis of architecture of Multilink SAS is capable to provide performance at a speed of consecutive reading up to 3350 Mbps and speed of consecutive record to 2720 Mbps in the Multilink mode, and up to 400 thousand input-output operations for reading with random access in the narrow-band mode or in the Multilink mode. Construction of Multilink with 4 ports serves as additional technology for achievement of the high performance coming to performance of SSD diskov PCI EXPRESS (PCIe) in PM5 series and allows to increase performance of the available infrastructure without complete redesign. SSD disks of PM5 series support technology of multithreaded record, function of intellectual management and grouping of data types for minimization of increase in volumes of record and collecting of garbage which result of application is a decrease in a delay, increase in durability, performance improvement and service qualities (QoS).


CM5 series

Devices of CM5 series are equipped with the NVMe interface and two ports PCIe Gen3 x4. These are corporate SSD disks. They support technology of multithreaded record, are ready to work in the NVMe over Fabrics mode, have functions of the vector list (SGL) and the buffer of memory of the controller (CMB). The CMB function uses a part of memory of DRAM of a SSD disk as memory a host system, reducing extent of use of DRAM on the party of a host and providing the high speed of system operation.

Use of technology 64-layer a flash memory of BiCS FLASH is supported by CM5 series. Its performance: up to 800 thousand transactions of any reading per second and 240 thousand transactions of any record per second for models with 5 cycles of rewriting of all disk in day (DWPD) and up to 220 thousand transactions of any reading per second for models with 3 DWPD at the maximum power consumption of 18 W for all models.

CM5 series is used as the platform for demonstration and creation of infrastructure for use of function of area of a non-volatile memory (PMR). PMR allows to increase a system memory due to memory of DRAM of a SSD disk without use of expensive modules of a non-volatile memory of DIMM (NV-DIMM). This function allows to use one solution on the basis of a SSD disk as as high-performance storage, and a non-volatile memory, meeting requirements to system performance with simultaneous considerable cost reduction due to transfer of transactions with metadata, such as maintaining magazines, recording and preparation of applications, on a SSD disk.

Toshiba is proud to introduce the innovative development in the field of corporate flash drives, at the same time expanding a portfolio of corporate SSD disks with CM5 and PM5 series on a basis a 3D flash memory of TLC. The release of SSD disks of PM5 series with the interface of SAS of 12 Gbps with a capacity from 400 GB to 30.72 TB with function of complete instant erasing of data (SIE) and support of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) standards is planned.

Capacity of SSD disks of CM5 series with the NVMe interface is supposed from 800 GB to 15.36 TB, with support of the SIE and TCG functions. Both series of products on the basis of memory of TLC conform to industry standards of durability, offering models with 1, 3 and 5 cycles of complete rewriting in day (DWPD). As a part of PM5 series there are models with 10 DWPD.
