cPanel

Product
Developers: CPanel, Inc
Date of the premiere of the system: 1996
Technology: ITSM - Management systems for IT service

cPanel is a control panel the server and a web hosting. Functions by means of the separate copy of the Web server working, as a rule, at port 2082 (or 2083/SSL). Using a panel control of the websites, setup of mail, domain names, etc. is exercised.

Main features: use of templates, existence of localization more than in 20 languages, multilevel management of users.

The supported OS

CentOS 5.x, 6.x, RHEL 5.x, 6.x, CloudLinux 5.x, 6.x, FreeBSD (from 9/30/2012 support is stopped), is the version for Windows (since February, 2014 it is not supported).

Components

Two components are a part of CPanel: actually CPanel and WHM (WebHost Manager).

WHM is the instrument of administration and allows to manage individual accounts, accounts of resellers and the server. By means of the WHM web interface it is possible to get access to all settings of the environment — for example, to set the important parameters influencing Apache performance (max_clients, min/max spare servers and others), access to all possible options PHP, etc. Settings can be changed via the web interface, but not to edit manually configuration files. However in order that new settings became effective, reassembly of separate components in certain cases can be required.[1]

cPanel is created for end users of a system and allows them to control a set of processes, since adding/removal of e-mail accounts and finishing with management of databases.

For setup of the Web server the WHM EasyApache tool is used. With its help it is possible to select a specific profile — a set of opportunities which will support the server. If to select, for example, the Basic profile, then all requests will be processed by means of the standard module mpm_prefork. If to select the MPM ITK profile, then the module mpm_itk increasing safety of operation of the Web server due to separation of processes on users will be used.

"From a box" CPanel supports only the Apache Web server. Support of other Web servers is implemented using third-party plug-ins and expansions, both proprietary, and free. That CPanel is focused on work with the Apache Web server it is possible to provide ample opportunities for flexible configuration and configuring. The flexibility is provided due to creation of an independent environment with reassembly in case of need. Work with WHM demands from the user of a certain knowledge and experience, but in most cases default settings are quite enough.

In the latests version (since 11:44 a.m.) the feature for centralized operation from a master server other servers from the preset WHM called a cluster of configurations is added. Opportunities for work in a cluster extend; new features are gradually added.
