2017: Failure from development

On October 10, 2017 Nokia announced the refusal from release of devices of virtual reality (VR). The Finnish company considers that this market develops too slowly.

According to the statement published on the website of Nokia, the company stops development of new versions of the VR cameras Ozo and other equipment concerning virtual reality. At the same time users who already purchased these devices will get support from the producer in accordance with the terms of the warranty agreement.

The division of Technologies Nokia was engaged in creation of these cameras and other consumer electronics. Its number of staff as reported in the company, will be reduced by 310 people. The general state of Technologies Nokia for October 10, 2017 makes 1090 employees. The most part of dismissals is necessary to Finland, Great Britain and the USA. Nokia promises to give various support to the employees who got laid off.

Nokia follows from the message that the market of virtual reality develops more weakly, than it was expected, as pushed Technologies Nokia  to reduction of investments in this area and accent shift towards licensing of technologies.

The company is going to pay the main attention to digital health care and business selling licenses to use of patents and a brand of Nokia.[1]

The analyst Ben Wood from consulting company CCS Insight says that the camera Ozo Nokia was more a niche product, than the producer expected. By the time of the output of the device the technology of virtual reality was at an early stage of development, and users needed a lot of time for processing of such content, the expert noted.

Demand for Ozo Nokia was weak even after 25 percent reduction in cost of the camera in August, 2017 — from $60 thousand to $45 thousand.
