History

2025: Construction for ₽6,3 billion of a plant for the production of catalysts for the production of synthetic rubbers

By mid-November 2025, Voronezhsintezkauchuk JSC, part of the Sibur group, is completing the construction of a new production of n-butyllithium catalyst with an investment of ₽6,3 billion. The new enterprise is designed to produce a key component in the production of synthetic rubbers and thermoplastics, commissioning is planned to be carried out in the first quarter of 2026.

The release of the first products is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026. Denis Muromtsev, director of the Sibur Polilab Voronezh Scientific Center, noted that the launch of the new line will replace the import of raw materials previously supplied from Europe and the United States.

Sibur built a plant for the production of catalysts for the production of synthetic rubbers for ₽6,3 billion

Muromtsev stressed that the project is an example of import substitution in the full sense of the word. He noted that the company previously depended on supplies from unfriendly countries, while without n-butyllithium it is impossible to produce thermoplastics using existing technologies.

The design capacity of the new enterprise will be 350 tons of products per year. The implementation of the project will create 57 jobs at the production site in the Voronezh region. The plant will produce a catalyst that is a critical component for the Russian chemical industry.

In July 2025, it became known that Sibur intended to conclude a special investment contract with the Russian government to finance this project. The authorities of the Voronezh region planned to give the project the status of "especially significant" with the subsequent provision of state support measures.

The intentions to create a production of n-butyllithium became known back in 2023. Initially, the volume of investments was estimated at ₽700 million, but by the beginning of construction work in the fall of 2024, the amount increased to ₽6,3 billion.[1]
