Secret Region is the cloud service intended for CIA and other intelligence agencies.
2017: Start
In November, 2017 the Amazon company provided the cloud service of Secret Region intended for CIA and other intelligence agencies.
The word "Secret" in project title means that he has the right to store the software and these categories of confidentiality "Confidentially" — is one step lower than the class "Top secret". It does cloud infrastructure of Amazon Web Services (AWS) attractive to intelligence agencies which regularly deal with the state secret and other confidential information.
Secret Region is not the first closed cloud service of Amazon. In six years prior to start of this solution the company submitted the GovCloud program within which the state clients got access to a separate pool of data centers for storage of important information. In 2013 Amazon signed the 10-year contract worth $600 million for rendering cloud services with the American government.
Secret Region is continuation of that agreement. The key difference consists that the service started in 2017 is focused, first of all, on intelligence agencies. The product is positioned as a method for an intelligence community to upgrade the IT infrastructure and to accelerate process of access to the classified information.
AWS becomes the first and only provider of cloud services offering the so-called "the closed regions" (group of data centers) for storage of the government data having a signature stamp "Open information", "Information raising security issues", "Confidentially" and "Top secret", said in the statement of Internet giant.
Amazon does not open income from state orders. According to forecasts of the analytical agency IDC, costs of the federal U.S. Government for cloud services will reach $2.2 billion in 2017, and in the 2021st they will rise to $3.3 billion[1]
