In December, 2017 Marwell Zoo in the British county Hampshire announced cost reduction on heating, having begun to use artificial intelligence of IBM company for increase in efficiency of heaters. A new system succeeded infrared heaters who are established over places for a dream in open-air cages animal and usually remain included all night long.
Employees of a zoo told that about a third of the amount of the account for the electric power are made by a payment only for heating. However using Internet of Things, machine learning, infrared sensors and miniature Raspberry Pi computers, the device on the Watson IoT platform distinguishing was succeeded to create IBM companies when animals are near the places, and automatically including heating. Earlier in a zoo tried to use passive infrared sensors that was not crowned with success as sensors react to lack of the movement and switch off heaters. Thus, the fallen asleep immovable animals were subject to cold at night.
As a basis for the solution implemented in a zoo there was a system which IBM uses at office in Munich for monitoring of "jams" in cafeteria. Using two thermovision sensors, each of which takes readings in 8 different points, the sensor registers 16 temperature points on section where people stand in a queue for coffee. Data from thermovision sensors are displayed by the LED display on a floor of the offices located the floor coffee bar is higher. Thus it is possible to trace, the cafeteria, proceeding from quantity of the "hot" points detected by sensors is how occupied.
Further the portable version of a monitoring system which principles formed the basis of the equipment for a zoo was made. Adaptation of such concept to the environment of a zoo — the first step to creation of more smart heating system for animals, is considered in IBM.[1]
