Thermal imagers in medicine

.

Main article: Innovations in medicine

In 1956-1957, Canadian surgeon Dr. Lawson published his classic works on the diagnosis of breast cancer using the thermal imaging principle, which provoked a boom in interest in the medical use of such a method. Many studies were organized, population screenings were conducted, in which many thousands of people participated. However, in the end, a negative result was obtained: by the mid-1980s, doctors came to the conclusion that cancer could not be reliably diagnosed in this way.

A new surge of interest in this method occurred in the mid-1990s. It was then that the first matrix thermal imagers appeared. In high speed mode, they provided ten times better sensitivity than the previous generation, and had good resolution, giving photographic image quality. So thermal vision began a new era in medicine.

In 1996, almost simultaneously with foreign analogues, a matrix thermal imager was created at the IFP SB RAS. Since then, more than 50 such devices have been manufactured at the institute, transferred to various scientific and medical organizations. Of course, the original design of the device is always finalized and modified.
