2018: Announcement of Digital Light
Within the International motor show in Geneva (on March 8-18, 2018) the Daimler AG company releasing cars under the name of Mercedes-Benz showed "smart" headlights under the name Digital Light. They not only will not stick together counter drivers, but also display light hints of An to the road.
The head optics consisting of traditional headlights and couple of small monochrome projectors has total permission in 2 million pixels — one million on each party. It approximately corresponds to HD quality. A ray of light, being reflected from microscopic reflectors, breaks into a huge number of pixels.
Light of headlights is automatically regulated by onboard electronics which analyzes data from a stereocamera and different sensors and also information arriving from the navigator to change brightness and the directions of light of headlights depending on a relief, type of the area, turns etc. that allows to minimize chances to blind drivers of both counter, and passing cars, at the same time effectively highlighting a roadbed, a roadside and road signs.
Remarkable feature of new technology capability began to project characters on the road. For example, if the system of recognition of signs detects the sign of a roadwork, then in addition to the increased lighting of the road in front of machine on asphalt the corresponding warning character will be highlighted. If the covering will be slippery, in front of machine on asphalt the snowflake will be lit. And if the system of a night image detects the pedestrian, then before a cowl in a visibility range of the driver there will be an arrow showing where there is a person.
At first the Digital Light headlights will be set in the representative Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sedan in the first half of 2018. Further the innovation optics will find application in other cars of the German concern.[1]
