In March, 2018 information on cooperation of the German carmaker BMW with British Circulor blockchain startup appeared. According to the statement of the CEO of Circulor Douglas Johnson-Pensdzhen, cooperation of the parties is directed to tracking of supply of "ethic" cobalt for the purpose of providing its legal origin.
According to official data, two thirds of supply of cobalt in the world are the share of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Africa), at the same time the fifth part of a resource is got by a "handicraft" method, including using child labor. By calculations of carmaker, the blockchain will allow to confirm production of cobalt only at the official enterprises that will exclude use probability at its production of illegal child labor.
Within the Circulor project implements blockchain technology in the software of the BMW cars that will provide a possibility of display of the producer of cobalt. Presumably, the barcode which will allow to trace it during transportation will be appropriated to cobalt.[1]
It is planned that at the first stage BMW will use a blockchain to guarantee stable supply of cobalt.[2]
As soon as a system is tested, and it will begin to work up to standard, it will be possible to be engaged in the solution of more complex cases, such as, for example, so-called "handicraft" mines" — Douglas Johnson-Pensdzhen reported Reuters news agency.[3] |
According to preliminary estimates carmaker, similar approach to law enforcement of origin of a resource will help to reduce costs on observance of regulatory requirements.
It is remarkable that it is not the first experience of partnership of BMW about a blockchain project. At the beginning of March, 2018 the conclusion with carmaker of the agreement on cooperation was declared by the Chinese company VeChain — a blockchain service for control of supply chains.[4]
