The most powerful supercomputer for nuclear fusion is created

Customers: National Institute of quantum and radiological science (Quantum and Radiological Science)

Science and education

Contractors: Cray
Product: Cray XC series

Project date: 2018/03

In March, 2018 it was announced creation in Japan, allegedly, of the most powerful supercomputer in the world for researches of nuclear fusion.   The Cray XC50 system is installed at National Institute of quantum and radiological science (Quantum and Radiological Science, QST)

Capacity of the supercomputer will exceed 4 petaFLOPS (twice more, than the predecessor has Helios), however the final digit is still unknown as a system will earn later in 2018. Also the name of this computer system by analogy with other projects is not told.

Scientists of QST will use for research and development in the field of nuclear fusion and for the project of the international experimental thermonuclear reactor (ITER) which is going to start in 2035. ITER is considered the first large-scale attempt to use for receiving the electric power thermonuclear reaction which occurs in the Sun (reaction of merge of cores of hydrogen) that in case of success will give to mankind really inexhaustible power source.

More than 1 thousand European and Japanese the researcher will get access to  the Cray XC50 system which is optimized under calculations of plasma physics (turbulence, the integrated modeling, physics of boundary plasma) and energy of nuclear fusion. The Cray company says that the speed and the integrated software environment considerably will improve infrastructure of QST and will help scientists to receive quicker results in researches.

Cray XC50 has the latests version of Intel processors and Nvidia and also the upgraded trib-in connection of Aries which is used in some fastest computers in the world. The interconnection layout Aries does possible multi-point communication between computing nodes of the supercomputer. Characteristics of the supercomputer for QST are not called.[1]
