2018: Beginning of sales
On March 19, 2018 Profusa announced that in Europe its biosensors implants transferring indications about the state of health of the patient to the smartphone were approved. It allowed the company to begin sales of these products which received the name.
Implants of 2-4 mm in size are made of hydrogel on the basis of the polymer which is usually used for soft contact lenses. Special dye is applied on molecules of hydrogel. Thanks to the small sizes, high flexibility and lack of unnaturally flat surfaces sensors will not be recognized by the immune system as alien objects and do not become covered with the isolating cicatricial fabric which would interfere with their contact with the internal environment of an organism. Instead sensors gradually are implemented into surrounding fabric, thanks to the sprouting capillaries and the migrating cages.
It is supposed that implants of Lumee Oxygen Platform will be active from several months to several years - actually, the first sensors implanted during clinical trials function more than four years.
For data reading, received by the sensor, the special pocket detector or an electronic plaster which radiates light with the infrared range is used. Under its influence molecules of dye begin to shine, and extent of fluorescence will depend on concentration of certain biochemical substances in an organism - different types of molecules of dye react to different substances, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide gas, glucose or lactate.
The obtained and transformed data are transferred to the user's smartphone. The application analyzes information, compares concentration of substances to reference values and displays the noticed deviations.
In Europe sensors implants are already used for control of level of oxygen in tissues of patients with atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries. Besides, these sensors can be used for control of level of oxygen in muscles of athletes for efficiency evaluation of trainings.[1]
