The National Institute of nuclear physics (ital. Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, INFN) is the scientific organization which is engaged in carrying out researches in the field of nuclear physics, elementary particle physics and astrophysics in Italy.


Two types of the organizations supplementing each other are a part of institute: 19 departments (ital. Sezioni) at physical faculties at the largest Italian universities and 4 national laboratories. Departments provide a direct connection between scientific research at institute and learning process at the university. National laboratories are used for placement of the large and unique experimental equipment.

At institute about 2000 employees are registered. About 2000 more employees of the universities and 1300 students and graduate students are involved in the researches conducted under patronage of institute.
