Burger King passed to flexible methodology of development at project implementation

Customers: Burger King

Product: QlikView

Project date: 2016/05  - 2018/05

The Qlever Solutions company, service provider on creation of the systems of a business intelligence (BI) on the Qlik platform, announced on June 20, 2018 completion of transfer of network of Burger King restaurants on flexible methodology of development (Agile) at project implementation.

Cooperation between Qlever Solutions and network of restaurants began in July, 2015 the First Qlever Solutions project for Burger King there was a creation of architecture of a BI system which, on the one hand, allowed to reduce sharply time of formation of the analytical reporting, with another, had ample opportunities for scaling and development. For July, 2018 in Burger King 46 applications of a business intelligence on the QlikView platform are used, all of them were developed and Qlever Solutions are supported.

Transition to flexible methodology of development started in May, 2016 and happened gradually. Work on those tasks which were already started or planned earlier was conducted according to a project management methodology of Waterfall ("falls"). This methodology relies on exact understanding of a project deliverable, and the project is broken into stages or stages which consecutive accomplishment results in the planned result.

The main outcome of the first stage of transition to flexible methodology of management of the BI project was the fact that managers of restaurants got access to objective and evident data on the work. As a result their involvement into management processes grew. Several minutes are spent for formation of the analytical reporting under all network. It allowed to send reports for last day before each of teleconferences which are carried out daily and heads of Burger King, regional managers and directors of restaurants participate in them.

The second stage of transition to flexible management began the BI project (Agile) in May, 2017. Reduction of a period which takes place from emergence of the new idea of use of data before implementation of this idea in the form of the ready report or a BI-application became a key problem of the second stage.

At the second stage the number of users of a BI system in Burger King grew to 100 people, and analytical reports were sent to about 500 employees of Burger King. Also the quantity of BI-applications and reports available to managers grew, additional data sources were connected to a system. On the party of Burger King there were many people who already got experience with data and understood the principles of work of a BI system. They could create independently the requirements for development of a BI system - to require new reports, to offer new indicators.

As development plans began to form differently, it was required to change also model of purchase of services of Qlever Solutions in development of a BI system. The Burger King company began to buy services in the principle time&material ("time and materials").

"Receiving services in the time&material model allowed us to begin to save. We can determine precisely the cost of each step in advance. Tasks of necessary opportunities of BI-applications and reports are put by our functional managers. They make every day the decisions based on data of a business intelligence. But we in the state have no BI specialist, our IT specialists have no tasks connected with a business intelligence - Qlever Solutions is engaged in it".

"The Qlik platform on which the system of a business intelligence of Burger King is constructed is suitable for agile development. All stages of work with data, such as extraction, transformation and visualization, occur in a uniform product. It allows to develop applications on steps, after each of which it is possible to look at result at once".

Thus, transition to flexible methodology of management of development (Agile) led to growth of the involvement and motivation of staff of Burger King, to increase in speed of release of BI-applications and reports and also to cost reduction of Burger King on a business intelligence. 40 managers of different level of Burger King put before a project team of Qlever Solutions from 15 to 20 tasks monthly. For July, 2018 the priority direction of development of a business intelligence in Burger King is broader application of predictive analytics, i.e. use of mathematical models for forecasting of revenue, demand and other business indicators. Besides, Burger King begins to test possibilities of the analysis audio-and video and this of restaurants to estimate quality of work of the employees and level of satisfaction of guests.
