2018: Release of the solution Dell EMC PowerEdge MX

On August 24, 2018 the Dell EMC company provided Dell EMC PowerEdge MX — the high-performance modular framework created for support of a broad spectrum of workloads in data processing centers. The solution PowerEdge MX is presented as a modular framework with the architecture developed for easy adaptation to future technologies and to server disaggregation noted in Dell EMC.

"The solution PowerEdge MX is proposed by flexible modular approach: an opportunity to build systems by a combination of servers, storages and switches. Such approach allows the organizations to transform the IT infrastructure so that to optimize resources and to provide protection of investments into the equipment of future generations".

The line of the solutions PowerEdge MX with kinetic infrastructure includes the developed chassis and blocks of resources, different on granularity, – both server, and resources for data storage, – which are connected to infrastructure through "smart" structure of input-output.

According to the statement of Dell EMC, the modular framework of PowerEdge MX developed for software-defined data centers is capable to provide operability of difficult projects of virtualization, a software-defined storage, the program configured networks, projects of artificial intelligence and Big Data. PowerEdge MX supports high-speed drives with NVMe technology and has regular implementation of technology of network connections 25GbE. Customers can collect the configurations satisfying to their individual requirements and to use the general pools of disaggregated resources in process of emergence of tasks. And as hardware capacity gathers "on the fly", the surplus of resources decreases and optimization of performance and efficiency is provided. The solution PowerEdge MX constructed using kinetic infrastructure is executed without the central unifying payment (midplane) that allows to support, according to the developer, technologies of several generations, different processors, drives and network interfaces. In particular, the lack of a unifying payment allowed to connect directly computing modules to input-output modules, providing a possibility of future upgrades without interruption of work and without replacement of a unifying payment. This constructive solution is ready to support of completely disaggregated components, including devices with data processing in RAM, such as memory of an accumulative class (Storage Class Memory), GPU and FPGA, having offered clients broad compatibility.

The opportunity of individual configuring of the solution PowerEdge MX thanks to a wide choice of components is offered customers:

  • The Dell EMC PowerEdge MX7000 chassis is a hardware basis with support of a great number of generations of server processors. Their main properties: scalability, integrated management of lifecycle and the single interface for all components. This chassis of format 7U includes 8 compartments for various combinations of computing nodes and data warehouses of both unary, and double width.
  • The computing Dell EMC PowerEdge MX740c and MX840c nodes are 2-and 4-socket modular servers with a high performance and a wide choice of drives, including NVMe-devices. The unary computing MX740c node and the MX840c model of double width support processors of the Intel Xeon Scalable Processor family and can be completed up to 6 TB RAM. The MX740c model is the two-socket server of unary width which may contain to 6 drives with the NVMe, SAS or SATA interface of a format 2.5 inches with support of multilevel storage between them whereas the MX840c model is the 4-socket server of double width supporting up to 8 drives.
  • Nodes of storage Dell EMC PowerEdge MX5016s — these full-scale nodes of storage of high density supplement modular servers MX. They are capable to contain to 16 hard drives with the interface of SAS with a possibility of hot swap. In one body MX about 7 MX5016s nodes allowing to place up to 112 hard drives with direct connection hold. Servers can appoint these drives individually, thereby providing optimal coefficient of capacity for the solution of specific tasks, the developer noted.
  • The switching Dell EMC PowerEdge MX nodes of type Ethernet and Fibre Channel — the switching modules with a low delay at data transmission and broad capacity are suitable for Wednesdays with a set of the chassis. Nodes are equipped with function of automatic compliance of topology, technology of prioritization of traffic, technology of automatic elimination of problems and the single interface of management. PowerEdge MX is a modular framework which maintains on a host both technology of 25 Gbps Ethernet (GbE), and the Fibre Channel with a speed up to 32 Gbps. Thanks to support of channels of connection with a backbone network 100GbE and the Fibre Channel 32G owners of complex systems with a large number of the chassis receive faster time of switching to 55%, claim in Dell EMC.

PowerEdge MX also offers an opportunity of intrasystem management using such solution as Dell EMC OpenManage Enterprise — Modular Edition. It provides key functions of the software OpenManage Enterprise within the built-in module of management for all IT infrastructure of the enterprise. Customers have an opportunity to manage and administer at the same time all components of a modular framework PowerEdge MX functioning in different chassis; to quickly make changes and also to get access to servers by means of the OpenManage Mobile application and the Quick Sync 2 function. Also the software of OpenManage Enterprise offers an ability to manage external rack and building block solutions from the single interface.

According to Dell EMC, with release of infrastructure of PowerEdge MX developed for flexible configuration, complex services of support and deployment of Dell EMC vary from delivery of completely integrated building block solutions before individual deployment and configuring. The list of services also includes the round-the-clock support of ProSupport Plus giving an opportunity of receiving consultations at the senior engineers of service and also the individual technical specialist for assistance.

The Dell EMC PowerEdge MX systems will be available for sale in Russia and in the world market since September 12, 2018.
