2018: Creation of a technology data network of the oil pipeline

On August 27, 2018 the STEP LOGIC company announced end of the infrastructure project for the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). Thanks to creation of failsafe and safe IT infrastructure on more than 100 objects of the customer information transmission rate on the route of the oil pipeline grew by 25 times.

Project Tasks

Creation of modern, reliable and failsafe telecommunication infrastructure for functioning of the APCS system (SCADA) of the oil pipeline which would provide dispatching control, management and monitoring of processes of pumping of crude oil became a key project task.

The amount of works including design, installation, a commissioning, testing and commissioning of the SCADA data network on more than 100 objects of the customer located throughout all pipeline was entrusted STEP LOGIC.

Project Progress

All works were carried out taking into account the diagram of construction of facilities and also with observance of strict requirements of Policy in the field of industrial security, labor and environmental protection of Caspian Pipeline Consortium company. The created infrastructure has high rates of fault tolerance and reliability at the expense of a multi-tier architecture of the solution.

Within the project on upgrade of the KTK data network the command of STEP LOGIC installed and configured network equipment which provided reliable service of technology data. Based on a SDH transport network specialists created a multiservice data network. The upgraded kernel of the SCADA system has four data transmission channels between NPS. Function of alternative channels of communication is performed by satellite and land radio channels. The solution architecture allows to provide fault tolerance of network at different abnormal scenarios.

For the organization of the protected interaction of SCADA network with the KTK corporate network and possibilities of providing controlled remote access the protective perimeter is organized, the remote controlled and protected connections to SCADA network are created. For security of connections of remote users different authentication mechanisms, traffic observation and workstations are implemented.

Project Results

  • Design, installation, commissioning, testing and commissioning of the SCADA data network on more than 100 objects located throughout all pipeline (more than 1.5 thousand km).
  • Carrying out audit of resources of network of the customer, analysis of their criticality and vulnerabilities, implementation of means of fight against network cracking and unauthorized access.
  • Implementation of an end-to-end system of monitoring and control of the equipment of a data network.
  • Territorial scope of the project: Kazakhstan (Atyrau region) and Russia (Astrakhan region, Kalmykia, Stavropol and Krasnodar regions).
  • Thanks to the upgrade existing and creation of new, failsafe and safe IT infrastructure information transmission rate grew by 25 times.

"The industry specifics of the project consisted in the continuity of process of transportation of oil: the pipeline stops only three times a year for 72 hours of prevention. During this time the project team needed to carry out the most complex and responsible work on switching of the equipment. During all rest of the time active work on design, configuring and a commissioning of the equipment and also training of staff of KTK was conducted. Thanks to close interaction, deep study and detailed work planning of all adjacent contractors, process of implementation took place successfully".

  • The largest international petrotransport project with participation of Russia, Kazakhstan and also leading world mining companies.
  • The project solution conforms to increased requirements of international standards.

Key indicators

  • 100 objects: stations, terminals and pipeline.
  • 8 years project term: 2011-2018.
  • 1,510 km pipeline extent across the territory of the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan.
  • by 25 times information transmission rate grew.
