On August 27, 2018 it became known that the Huawei company created an optical transport network (OTN) using technology of complete wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) for "Austrian Federal Railroads" company (ÖBB). The DWDM technology provides network transmission capacity at the level of 100 GB / with and a possibility of effective expansion of broadband network systems. The products OTN based on DWDM for ÖBB company were implemented in different points in the territory of Austria and Germany.
Showing the annual growth of rail transportation at the level of 10-15 percent, ÖBB faced a problem of excessive load of the backbone networks of communication used by it for scheduling of the movement and sale of tickets. Also need for upgrade of control of high-speed trains - also based on ICT had important value. Being going to expand in the future the railway system with a scope of 90 percent of the territory of the country, ÖBB is going to build additional stations and to increase the existing resources of local and backbone broadband networks. All existing and future stations will be equipped with video surveillance systems in the HD format, the intelligent office systems and other information solutions developed for needs of the railroad. For satisfaction of the growing demand for rail transportation in Austria the company needed a high-speed backbone network.
According to the management of ÖBB, creation of stable, high-speed and high-quality network forms a basis for development of railway communication. Adhering to this concept, the ÖBB company looked for the competent partner capable to unroll networks in the industrial environment.
Having analyzed needs of the Austrian operator, the Huawei company made the decision to use the DWDM technologies which are widely applied in the telecommunication market to creation of optical transport networks.
The architecture of separation of a tributary and line signal inherent in OTN networks provides the most effective use of capacity of the line, guarantees access to different services and considerably increases flexibility of a configuration and sorting of services.
For support of OTN, virtual channels (VC) and package cross-connections in network the Multi-Service OTN function (MS-OTN) is used that gives an opportunity of integrated management of all types of services and leads to creation of a perspective intelligent network.
Capacity of a coherent system was increased to 100 GB / with on a wave or to 8 Tb / with on each couple of fiber optic canals. At further upgrade network transmission capacity will be increased from 100 GB to 400 GB, 1T and 2T of channels by one wave.
The Fiber Doctor (FD) and Optical Doctor (OD) functions allow to perform automatic commissioning and optimization of services, minimizing operating costs on maintenance of network in proper operating condition.
Protection mechanisms at the electric and optical levels provide fast switching trouble-free in network functioning. Thanks to these properties, DWDM technologies can be used for transfer of important and sensitive data.
It is possible to refer problem solving with network performance to advantages of the created OTN infrastructure of ÖBB company and ensuring sufficient capacity to all users. The network supports the modes of flexible access to services and simplifies processes of use of network devices, data processings and administrations. Results of implementation of OTN provided to ÖBB competitive advantages in terms of operational management. It is expected that this network will enter the significant contribution to further optimization of products and services of the Austrian carrier.
