2018: Strix SCAR II notebook (GL704)

On August 23, 2018 the ASUS company provided the 17.3-inch game Strix SCAR II notebook (GL704) of the ROG Strix series.

According to the statement of the developer, Strix SCAR II combines high mobility with the qualitative image. Its 17.3-inch screen with thin (about 7 mm) a frame from three parties is placed in the compact body less than 400 mm wide corresponding by the size to typical 15.7-inch devices. The display has the following characteristics: update rate – 144 Hz, response time – 3 ms, a color scope – 100% of sRGB.

In design of the Strix SCAR II notebook kevlar and camouflage textures are used, demonstrating that it is intended for fans of shooters. More paints to the notebook are given by 7-zonal illumination of Aura: four zones at the keyboard, two zones along a front edge of the body and the last – in the ROG logo on a display cover. It can be synchronized with illumination of other Aura-compatible devices (Aura Sync technology).

The keyboard, according to the developer, differs in the thought-over ergonomics, durability and the optimized layout reminding external computer keyboards (the increased width of a key of a space and intervals between groups of function keys). Switches of keys are expected 20 million clicking, and the Overstroke technology provides the accelerated operation in comparison with traditional keyboards. At the same time the complete depth of the course of keys is comfortable 1.8 mm.

According to information provided by the developer enter the maximum configuration of the Strix SCAR II notebook the six-nuclear processor Intel Core i7-8750H capable to execute 12 computing flows at the same time, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX video card 1060. They are supplemented by wireless Intel Wi-Fi module 802.11ac of Wave 2 at data transfer rate to 1.73 Gbps (in the presence of compatible router). The set of interfaces includes four USB ports Type-A, the reversible USB connector Type-C, the mini-DisplayPort connector with support game monitors with G-Sync technology and HDMI 2.0 port which is capable to bring to the external monitor or the TV the image of a format 4K/UHD with a picture frequency of 60 Hz.

For storage of files and installation of games the high-speed solid state drive with the M.2/NVMe interface which can be added with the optional hybrid hard drive of 1 TB is offered. In the speaker system of the notebook the intelligent amplifier allowing to increase volume without any damage to loudspeakers is used, claim in ASUS.

As noted in ASUS, the compact size of the device imposes restrictions for the cooling system. The solution HyperCool Pro developed by engineers of ASUS consists of three radiators and two fans. One radiator is selected only under the graphic processor. Its task – to cope with the additional heat generated during start of games. Two others service several components at once that corresponds to different scenarios of use of the notebook, including where the main loading lays down on the central processor. Copper edges of each radiator have the reduced thickness that allowed to increase their total number, so and the total area of heatdispersion, having at the same time reduced their resistance to an air flow. One more solution is trapezoid notch in a display cover thanks to what warm air can freely come out back air vents when the notebook is open.

For ROG series devices the ASUS company submits the unified Armoury Crate platform. Using this application it is possible to set system settings and an operation mode of synchronizable illumination of Aura. Also there is an opportunity to create up to four profiles with parameters which will be automatically loaded at start of certain games and applications. application Mobile Dashboard available to devices acts as mobile addition with operating systems Android and iOS. It allows to perform remote monitoring and setup of parameters, without interrupting the game started on the notebook, the developer claims.

Armoury Crate is also used for adjustment of fans of the cooling system, offering the user five modes. The Turbo mode is intended for serious game loading, the Silent mode – in order that in silence to watch the movie, and the balanced mode represents something between two previous in terms of efficiency of cooling and noise level. The standard mode Windows with default arguments and a user mode is also available to independent setup of speed of fans. Switching between all of them is performed by cycling and consecutive clicking Fn+F5 keys.
