3D - printing of parts: As Siemens saves time and money under repair of trains

Customers: Siemens AG

Contractors: Stratasys

Project date: 2018/09

In September, 2018 Siemens opened how the company approves, the first digital service center of trains. In it three-dimensional printing of parts thanks to which time of production of spare parts is reduced by 95% is organized, the warehouse of spare parts decreases and return of railway transport to work accelerates.

The new repair shop of the German concern which received the name Siemens Mobility RRX Rail Service Center is located in Dortmund (Germany). There the Fortus 450mc 3D-printer from Stratasys company which is used to production of spare parts and tools which are necessary at the moment is installed.

Siemens uses 3D-printers for repair of trains and saves up to 95% of time on production of spare parts

Siemens notes that parts for trains which were made by traditional methods in six weeks earlier in Siemens Mobility RRX Rail Service Center will be created in only 13 hours. Within a week employees of the service center can organize a new cycle of production, optimize it and carry out 3D - printing of the products ready to use. The platform is capable to service about 100 trains every month.

For Siemens application of three-dimensional printing is an opportunity to accelerate repair, to increase efficiency of work and to reduce costs, and for Stratasys — an opportunity to receive regular orders.

Having integrated a number of the innovative digital technologies, we can increase considerably efficiency of railway communication of our clients. Additive manufacturing of Stratasys FDM plays an important role, allowing us to optimize work with spare parts for more long cycles, at the same time having reduced costs and terms of accomplishment to the most minimum during all the time — the head of additive manufacturing Siemens Mobility Michael Kuczmik said.

He noted that use 3D - printings helps to perform any urgent works in the center as parts, including one-time and specialized, are made as required.[1]
