Hitachi started the first system of radiation therapy by heavy ions

Customers: The center of heavy ionic therapy  in Osaka (Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center)

Pharmaceutics, medicine, health care

Project date: 2018/10

In October, 2018 Hitachi announced installation and start of the first system of radiation therapy using heavy ions. The equipment was deployed in the Center of heavy ionic therapy  in Osaka (Japan) which as a result became one of the few places in the world where such advanced form of radiotheraphy is made.

A system occupied two procedural offices in which the supply of a bunch is executed in the horizontal and vertical directions and also one more cabin for radiation horizontally and at an angle.

The device is supplied with special technology of scanning which defines type of an oncological disease and provides synchronization with respiratory movements of the patient in real time. She also uses these visualization and calculates the dose suitable under plans of treatment.

Therapy by heavy ions has the high level of relative biological efficiency (RBE), especially for disteel edge of a pica  of Bragg that is able to afford to achieve more effective suppression of tumors — the chief executive of division of the radiation oncological systems of Hitachi Hiroyuki Itami (Hiroyuki Itami) says. — Besides, the smaller side half-shade of a bunch can provide more conformal dose of radiation lateralno and limit damage of normal fabric. As the heavy ionic bunch requires more powerful accelerator, its size and cost in comparison with the proton equipment can be two-three times more.

As reported in the press release, Hitachi actively advances radiation therapy by the charged particles worldwide, supplying to medical institutions the advanced equipment by means of which more than 16 thousand patients received medical treatment (data for October, 2018). In June, 2018 Hitachi attached to itself the business developed by Mitsubishi Electric on release of the equipment for radiation therapy by the charged particles.[1]
