Volkswagen began to use the quantum computer for traffic management on roads

Customers: Volkswagen Group

Mechanical and Instrument Engineering

Contractors: D-Wave

Project date: 2018/11

On November 6, 2018 at the technology Web Summit 2018 conference in Lisbon (Portugal) the German carmaker Volkswagen Group announced a management system for road traffic on the basis of quantum computings.

The group of IT specialists of Volkswagen developed an algorithm for regulation of traffic flow, using possibilities of high-performance quantum computers. Using new technology "managing directors of public transport of the organization, taxi pools and suppliers of transport services will be able to use even more effectively the vehicle fleets, minimizing waiting time for passengers", says Volkswagen.

For the solution of such complex problem the company used quantum computings as they provide the necessary speed and computing power for processing of huge data arrays. Not supercomputers, namely the quantum systems by November, 2018 best of all are suitable for forecasting of automobile traffic, demand for transport at some point and time of stay in a way, claim in Volkswagen.

The algorithm Volkswagen at first analyzes anonymous data on the movement of motorists by means of normal computers, and then addresses the quantum systems for optimization of traffic, using predictive analytics.

The road models created using quantum technologies help to reduce idle time of public transport, to unload roads to rush hours and to adapt operation of traffic lights for the current road situation. Besides, in the future on roads there will be a large number of pilotless vehicles, the quantum computer will collect data and from it like cars and also to manage them.

For implementation of such Volkswagen project used capacities of quantum computers of D-Wave company. Decided to use a management system for road traffic at first in Barcelona where the big database in which information on a situation on roads is flown down is unrolled.[1]
