Singapore attracted Google to fight against killing mosquitoes by means of artificial intelligence

Customers: National Environmental Protection Agency of Singapore (SNEA)

Government and social institutions

Contractors: Google

Project date: 2018/11

In November, 2018 it became known that Singapore attracted Google to fight against killing mosquitoes by means of modern technologies. The American company through "subsidiary" of Verily Life Sciences will use algorithms of artificial intelligence for fight against diseases which carriers are mosquitoes. Together with the National Environmental Protection Agency of Singapore (SNEA) will conduct work on reduction of population of mosquitoes of Aedes which extend yellow fever, Dengue fever and a Zika virus.

The project called Project Wolbachia Singapore was announced at the fifth Singapore international seminar on tenge (SIDW). Within the action the algorithm of computer vision and AI will be used to reduce time spent for separation of population of mosquitoes into males and females, and at the second stage technologies of the company will be used for carrying out researches under natural conditions.

It is not the first similar project. In April, 2018 more than one million mosquitoes of Aedes infected within the project with special bacteria of Wolbachia were produced across all Australia together with National association of scientific and application studies (CSIRO), James Cook University and the University of Queensland. Though males do not bite and do not extend a disease, they copulate with females and produce eggs which do not hatch that does population fruitless and constraining populations of mosquitoes. The automated system of release which precisely controls dispersion and distribution of female individuals of Aedes producing sterile eggs was developed.

The first results under natural conditions showed that during peak seasons the quantity of the biting females decreased by 95%. The program was successful and can become the main method of fight against spread of a Zika virus and Dengue fever if there is a financing for its further development.[1][2]
