Content

Nextcloud is a set of client-server programs for creation and use of the cloud storage. On functionality it is similar to Dropbox, at this Nextcloud it is possible to install on the physical server.

Unlike proprietary services, such as Dropbox, an open architecture of Nextcloud allows to add functionality on the server in the form of applications and allows users to control the data completely.

2018: Inclusion in an ecosystem of Nextcloud of online editors of Onlyoffice

Developers Onlyoffice Nextcloud announced also on November 21, 2018 partnership thanks to which the enterprises can get access to the online editors with the maximum compatibility with formats Microsoft Office integrated into the powerful file exchange platform. In more detail here.

2016

Specific Features

As of December, 2016 files of NextCloud are stored on the server and can be available through WebDAV if it is necessary. The user files are ciphered during transit (it is necessary to include enciphering). NextCloud supports client software programs on Windows, OS X, and Linux for synchronization between the server and the client.

Users of Nextcloud can manage calendars (CalDAV), contacts (CardDAV), to plan tasks from within the platform.

In terms of administration Nextcloud allows to manage users and groups (using OpenID or LDAP). Content can be shared, determining competent permissions to a read and write between users and groups. Besides, users of Nextcloud can shares files through URLs.

Nextcloud represents such functions as possibilities of monitoring, full-text search and authentication of Kerberos and also audio / video conference, expanded federation and small improvements of the user interface.

The first version

Frank Karlitschek, ownCloud developer acted as the author of the project. After leaving OwnCloud, Inc. he created fork under the name NextCloud in June, 2016 and continues its development together with other OwnCloud developers.
