2019: Beginning of sales
At the beginning of February, 2019 Boston Scientific announced the beginning of sales of a stimulator of a spinal cord of Spectra WaveWriter intended for treatment of chronic pain.
By the beginning of February, 2019 more than 100 million people suffer from chronic pain. Need of treatment of such patients opioids led to epidemic of abuse, overdoses and lethal outcomes. As a result suppliers of medical services had to find alternative methods of treatment of patients with chronic pain, one of which was a neurostimulation.
The Spectra WaveWriter system gives electric impulses of different frequency, width and amplitude to a spinal cord, blocking a painful signal which goes from the peripheral nervous terminations to a brain. At neurostimulation the impulse blocking a painful signal can cause a paresteziya – almost imperceptible feeling of pricking in the place of developing of pain.
Boston Scientific positions Spectra WaveWriter as the first and unique device for treatment of chronic pain with control on the basis of a feedback. A system for neurostimulation of Spectra WaveWriter combines in itself two types of therapy allowing to overcome accustoming to one of treatment types. One of types of therapy is followed paresteziy, another, subperceptual, does not cause any feelings at patients. Using the system of neurostimulation Spectra WaveWriter patients can combine both of these methods of treatment for overlapping of one area of pain or use each type of therapy as required in the best way to stop pain from several sections.
Doctors can precisely configure necessary characteristics of impulses, and patients can provide a feedback in real time using the remote control. Together these functions allow to provide the individualized approach to treatment of chronic pain.[1]
