2019: Platform Creation

At the end of February 2019, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Continental announced the creation of a joint blockchain platform through which automakers will be able to exchange and sell data generated by or related to vehicles.

Thanks to the new solution, automakers will "monetize their data and differentiate their brands." In addition, they implement secure information transfer, which will lead to the launch of new services for drivers, such as finding free parking spaces and warning about car congestion in real time.

Several existing digital ecosystems allow data to be exchanged through intermediaries, where platform owners centrally coordinate data flows and monetization. Taking a complimentary approach, the HPE platform and Continental use a decentralized architecture based on blockchain technologies, HPE and Continental said in a joint statement made as part of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

According to partners, market participants, such as automakers, continue to store data in their own data centers and exchange only certain sets of information only in the process of purchasing a car and directly with the buyer. This approach provides data sovereignty to all ecosystem participants while providing a highly efficient and secure procedure for monetizing machine data.

HPE and Continental note that in the case of using a blockchain platform, drivers will receive a simple mechanism that allows them to confirm the use of data or refuse. The decision complies with the requirements of the general data protection regulations GDPR and procedures adopted in relation to information protection other countries.[1]
