2020: Kioxia XD6

On November 6, 2020, KIOXIA Europe announced that it has expanded its SSD portfolio for customers, businesses, and data centers with KIOXIA XD6 devices in the E1.S. form factor. KIOXIA XD6 are solid-state drives in the E1.S form factor that meet the specific requirements of hyperscaled applications, including the performance, power, and thermal performance requirements of the Open Compute Project (OCP) "NVMe Cloud SSD Specification." KIOXIA XD6 drives for November 2020 are being tested in several centers.

According to the company, the KIOXIA EDSFF E1.x solid-state drives are flash memory for servers in cloud and hyperscaled data centers. The E1.S form factor, using the "NVMe Cloud SSD Specification" OCP, replaces the shell-free M.2 form factor and provides greater density. E1.S also supports hot swap to improve serviceability, which is another advantage over M.2.

The KIOXIA devices of the XD6 line comply with the PCIe 4.0 and NVMe 1.3c specifications and are available in E1.S 9.5 mm, 15 mm and 25 mm form factors. The XD6 series was designed to deliver consistent performance, low latency, and reliability across 24-hour cloud data centers.

Key features:

  • Serial read and write performance up to 6500 Mbps and 2400 Mbps, respectively;
  • Power consumption 15 W;
  • Security Settings: TCG Opal
  • Complete end-to-end data path protection;
  • Protection against power supply system failures;
  • Extended information about the health of the drive;
  • Stable performance and low latency at centerloads;
  • In-house controller optimized for hyperscalability.

2019: SSD XD5 Series based on 64-layer 3D memory BiCS FLASH TLC

The company Toshiba Memory Europe announced in April 2019 the launch of the XD5 Series platform, which includes SSD (PCIe [1] Solid-State Drives (SSDs) with NVMeSSD [2] 2.5in, 7mm thick [3] form factor, optimized to reduce latency and improve performance stability for high-read workloads. The SSD XD5 Series in the 2.5 "form factor is designed for both data centers and cloud infrastructure, and is ideal for NoSQL databases, large scale-out mining systems, and streaming solutions. They are also optimal for use in solutions and project systems (OCPs Open Compute Project).

These drives are based on 64-layer 3D memory BiCS FLASH TLC (3 bits of data in one cell) and have a PCIe Gen3 x4 interface (4 lines). They provide serial read performance of up to 2,700 megabytes per second (MB/s) and serial write performance of up to 895 MB/s at low power consumption in active mode (7 watts). With one full-media-per-day recording (DWPD) cycle, the XD5 Series SSD allows you to write almost 4 terabytes (TB) of arbitrary data daily for five years, maintaining a constant level of performance. Free access read and write performance is 250,000 and 21,000 IOPS, respectively, making the XD5 line a reliable solution for high-read or transactional workloads.

The 2.5-inch XD5 Series extends  Toshiba's rich range of SSD data centers to complement the previous M.2 22110 of 1920 gigabytes (GB) and 3840  GB [4]. Flash memory and controllers used in XD5 drives provide reliability, data protection, end-to-end error detection, and power loss protection. Devices are subject to a limited five-year warranty.

The 2.5 "XD5 Series evaluation samples are already available for individual customers. Serial deliveries are scheduled for Q2 2019.
