NEC implements face recognition system for revealing substitution of students at examinations

On May 20, 2019 the NEC company announced deployment of the system of face recognition in the Australian educational institutions NeoFace for the purpose of fraud prevention during examination.

At first the technology was tested by Genix Ventures company in one of higher educational institutions in Melbourne. Then the solution was implemented in the certification centers Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessments intended for physicians who want to practice in English-speaking clinics. Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessments checks knowledge of English for professional use.

Sometimes instead of the student other more prepared and experienced person who issues himself for the entrant comes to examination. The CEO of Genix Ventures Steve Godinho says that the share of false students can reach 2%.

According to him, the software for face recognition which identifies the person not only before examination, but also in time with some frequency can solve a problem to reduce to zero risk of substitution of people.

We want to guarantee that we regardless of the place of our work when someone submits the application for testing, the person appearing in day of examination and the one who receives the certificate on assessment were the same person — the head of Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessments Sujata Stead said.

However use of the systems of face recognition restrains criticism of opponents who say that such technologies violate the rights of people to personal privacy.

By May, 2019 at the Australian schools the pilot federal project on installation of surveillance cameras in classrooms of private schools for control of attendance of occupations came to the end. On the next stage of the project deployment of the equipment in the state educational institutions is planned.^[1]
