Russian Museum of Ethnography — for May, 2019 one of the largest ethnographic museums of Europe. Founded in 1897 by the emperor Nicholas II, REM also secretly bears a name of "the ethnographic Hermitage", and stores in the funds more than 500 thousand objects of the numerous and small people of Russia since 18th century. Electronic copies of museum collections will allow to expand a circle of the published materials even more. So, among the exhibits digitized within the project - the negatives with images of traditional occupations, crafts, family ceremonies and holidays collected by the staff of the museum in 1950-1980-hkh years during the expeditions on all republics of the Soviet Union. The photofund, in turn, is provided by albums and large-format photos of the 19th - the beginnings of the 20th century with views of areas, geographical objects, settlements, national suits. Among 11,000 illustrations - unique pencil sketches on all regions of the former Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.
