At the end of June, 2016 Lufthansa called terms of the organization of Internet access on short-range runs. The European agency on aviation security (EASA) provided airlines the additional certificate on providing service (STC).
According to the message of Lufthansa, broadband access in the Internet onboard the airplanes of the company performing flights of short and average extent will appear in October, 2016. To the middle 2018 it is going to equip with this service everything A320 family liners belonging to the German airline.
Lufthansa Technik which became the Europe's first company on the operation, service and repair of airplanes which got the corresponding approval from EASA will be engaged in installation of the necessary equipment. For ensuring Internet access the Global Xpress Aviation system from the supplier of satellite communication of Inmarsat will be used onboard.
The service is based on use of broadband satellite technology (KA range) and provides a complete reliable covering on routes of short and average extent through satellite network Inmarsat.
Passengers will be able to go on-line by means of notebooks and mobile devices, being connected to the wireless network of Wi-fi unrolled onboard. Users will be able not only to browse mail and to open pages in the web browser, but also to work with "heavier" applications and video content. Later it is going to implement a possibility of sending Sms or data transmission from the mobile phones.
All necessary IT infrastructure (including implementation of network transactions and work of the innovation portal for passengers of FlyNet network) onboard airplanes is developed by Lufthansa Systems company.
