Walmart now uses smart cameras noticing theft of goods

On June 20, 2019 it became known of use in Walmart of "smart" cameras which will recognize thefts of goods in shops.

The monitoring system received the name Missed Scan Detection by Walmart and is based on the technology developed by the Irish company Everseen.

Cameras thanks to algorithms of artificial intelligence reveal cases when products are put in a bag or a packet without preliminary scanning by the cashier or the self-service terminal. If a system sees" attempts to commit theft, it will notify on it the security guard.

As told in Walmart to the Business Insider edition, the Missed Scan Detection by Walmart technology by June 20, 2019 is used more than in 1 thousand shops. According to the representative of retailer, thanks to an innovation the shortage of products caused by theft or human errors significantly decreased.

Walmart losses because of thefts and errors of scanners reach $4 billion a year. In 2017 the American retail networks lost about $47 billion because of a shoplifting, the USA given by National federation of retail demonstrates (  National Retail Federation, NRF).

Add to Walmart that the artificial intelligence will help to prevent not only theft, but also other adverse situations and in general should improve safety of buyers. 

While Amazon uses AI systems for simplification and automation of purchases, Walmart implements technologies for performance improvement of employees. In the spring of 2019 in Walmart the shop in which the system on the basis of artificial intelligence providing monitoring of stock in real time is used opened. Such approach allows employees precisely the nobility when it is necessary to fill up stocks something. Besides, Walmart invests money in creation of the robotic devices used for cleaning of shops.^[1]
