2019: The redemption of $300 thousand to the racketeer who stole data of 1 million clients

In the middle of August, 2019 Asurion paid $300 thousand to the racketeer who claimed that he has "confidential" bank information on more than 1 million employees and clients of insurance company.

Though Asurion confirmed the information leak fact, the company noted that the malefactor managed to steal much less information, than claims. FBI already delayed the suspect by the name of Nicholas Burks from the cities of Antioch, State of Tennessee — the former employee of Asurion dismissed in March, 2019.

Asurion paid $300 thousand to the racketeer who stole data of 1 million clients

Affirms as materials of federal court that at the beginning of August, 2019 the racketeer sent to seven rukvoditel of the company the anonymous e-mail. Affirmed as the letter that the malefactor stole more 100th terabyte of "confidential data" of Asurion, including the social security number and bank information of several thousand employees and more than one million names, the addresses, phone numbers and customer accounts.

The racketeer applied samples of corporate documents, including social security numbers of some employees. The malefactor threatened to transfer this information to newspapers and the competing companies if do not pay him the redemption in bitcoins in the amount of $350,000 within 24 hours. According to reports, Asurion paid the most part of this redemption.

According to the press secretary of Asurion, there are no proofs that confidential data of clients were compromised yet. According to internal investigation of the company, the malefactor obtained only information concerning rather small number of employees. They are already given support of service of protection against theft of personal data.

Asurion refuses to give more detailed information in connection with the continuing investigation. FBI and US Attorney Office also refused to comment on case which is still far from end.[1]
