1647: Dutch sailors look out for port spot after shipwreck

In 1647 , the sailors who survived the shipwreck of the Dutch ship Haarlem lived on the shore for about a year and began relations with the local population. Back in Holland, they talked about favorable conditions in these parts and after a while the Dutch returned to build a seaport here. It is believed that this is how the city of Cape Town appeared.

In July 2019, specialists from the African Institute of Marine and Underwater Research, Exploration and Education (Aimure, South Africa) announced an important archaeological find. According to the researchers, they found parts of the Dutch ship Haarlem, which sank off the coast of South Africa in 1647. This shipwreck was recognized as one of the turning points in the history of the country.

Dr. Bruno Werz is the chief archaeologist of the project  and has been reviewing historical maps and documents of the proposed Haarlem crash area since 1989.

The researchers found parts of the ship near the shore  in Cape Town at a depth of about four meters. According to scientists, this is a very important find for the whole country, because it was thanks to the disaster that occurred in the 17th century that the city of Cape Town appeared.
