Drones began to use for laying of a roof

Customers: University of Michigan

Science and education

Contractors: DJI

Project date: 2019/09

At the end of September, 2019 researchers from the University of Michigan provided the drone for laying of a roof. The oktokopter equipped with a nail gun is capable to fix easily a tile on the roof model.

The command of izhener took the DJI S1000 drone which was used for installation of a flame thrower earlier as a basis. They installed the system of cameras and markers which allow the drone to define own location and the area of work precisely. Engineers programmed the virtual switch so that the drone could work with an air nail gun. As demonstration they allowed the drone to fix a tile on a wooden panel under different corners to simulate a different bias of a roof.

Despite impressive success, the command notes that a system concedes to the person used for accomplishment of the same work so far. However engineers already see several methods to accelerate it. While the drone can work only within 10 minutes for one run, however the feed cable will allow it to put a tile vaguely long.

Besides, engineers noted redundancy of an installed system of cameras and markers. Actually for achievement of result the drone needs only several reference points, and different coloring of a tile and a subject of material is quite enough that the UAV could understand an assigned task. Engineers agreed that for the version of the drone stacker in real practice would be to install a small system enough from several cameras which would allow to estimate orientation and provision of a tile.

Authors presented results of the research in article which was published online and also released video on which showed operation of the drone stacker.[1]
