2019: Announcement
At the end of October, 2019 Mastercard announced that it in cooperation with Envisible company creates a blockchain platform for tracking of a supply chain of seafood.
The new Wholechain system from software developer for tracking of Envisible food will work based on the Provenance platform. It will allow suppliers to check compliance of seafood to ethical and environmental standards. Besides, the enterprises using the Wholechain system will be connected to MasterCard payment system, i.e. will be able not only to monitor deliveries, but also to pay them.
The American retail network selling food products of Topco became the first user of a new system. For a start the origin of such goods as a salmon, a cod and shrimps will be traced. In shops of Topco network buyers will see special QR codes on seafood. Having scanned them using the smartphone, they will be able to obtain summary of where fish was hooked and as it was brought to shop.
Initially the Provenance platform was created by MasterCard for tracking of designer clothes and luxury goods, but now the company intends to expand its application. No wonder - Gartner survey conducted in 2019 among the 850th a blockchain projects worldwide showed that tracking of a supply chain quickly gains popularity, and similar projects turn into the status pilot more often, than other options of use of blockchain technologies.
Tracking of a supply chain of MasterCard and Envisible is an example hybrid a blockchain system where data are transmitted through the blockchain closed from strangers, and information for the consumer is in a public part of a system which can be loaded in the form of mobile application. It is expected that hybrid blockchains will dominate on the arena of e-commerce.[1]
