Rosatom will find out how by means of radiation to protect agricultural products

2019: The order for accomplishment of experiments on disposal of agricultural products of wreckers

On November 8, 2019 it became known that the Rusatom Healthcare company (enters into Rosatom state corporation) ordered accomplishment of experiments which results will be required for scientific justification of optimal conditions of impact of radiation on agricultural and food products to save it from wreckers and to prolong storage lives.

As it appears from materials on the website of purchases of Rosatom, ionizing radiation exposure should subject the pilot batches of grain (wheat and barley) which are previously infected with the most widespread insects wreckers, torments, dried fruits (raisin, dried apricots, prunes), nuts. Besides, it will be necessary to irradiate the batches of onions, garlic and also potatoes, including a so-called chipsovy sort put on storage.

After that it is necessary to find out, how effectively it was succeeded to protect grain, flour, nuts and sukhofrukuta from damage by insects, and vegetables – from germination. All works should be performed not later than April, 2020. On the basis of experimental data it will be necessary to define optimal conditions of radiation processing of products. The received results are going to be used when developing interstate standards of the Eurasian Economic Union and for harmonization of technical regulations of EEU with the international regulatory base.

According to IAEA, radiation processing is method of processing of food and agricultural products and protection against damage, reliable and safe for consumers. Radiation of food can be carried out using gamma-ray irradiation plants and/or accelerators of electrons.
