2019: Announcement

In the middle of November, 2019 researchers from the Technology university of Montana provided the EStAD device "spraying" bandage on an open wound. This portable device for an electrospinning with limited electric field which can safely apply drugs and polymeric fibers for formation of a bandage directly on biological surfaces.

Electrospinning - well studied method of formation of polymeric fibers. When using biocompatible materials the received fibers could be applied also in medicine, however the electrospinning requires a high difference of potentials because of what direct sedimentation of fibers on skin becomes dangerous to the person.

Researchers from the Technology university of Montana provided the EStAD device

The group of researchers could bypass this restriction. Instead of using potential difference between the tool and a surface for sedimentation of fibers, the new device just sprays fibers in air over a surface as a spray paint. At the same time the besieged fibers stick to the materials containing moisture such as skin of the person. Thanks to the innovation mechanism the EStAD device can be used for imposing of a bandage and controlled release of medicine eventually.

The EStAD device was tested on a section of skin of a pig and also on a hand of the person in a glove and is the first-ever means of an electrospinning providing safe placement of the fibers delivering drugs, directly to a wound. Besides, in the modular device material for bandaging and also the used medicine can be selected depending on a situation. Researchers hope that the new technology will be used at treatment of wounds in remote areas where the emergency medical care can be unavailable.[1]
