2019: Implementation of automatic system of protection and updating of ATMs

On December 3, 2019 Tinkoff Bank reported that together with software developer SafenSoft implemented a safety management system of ATMs which allows to update software in them far off and automatically, without participation of engineers. Such updating is necessary for protection against fraud, elimination of the arising errors, installation of additional functionality, etc.

It is a system, the first in the Russian market, for ATMs which does not require approval of installation of functionality of technical services and a security service of bank. Process of updating of software does not influence operation of ATMs in any way. All structures of network are reliably protected as from widespread technologies of cracking, and the arising attacks. Information on hard drives is ciphered that provides isolation of data and makes impossible shutdown of information security tools. Thanks to disk encryption, even in case of stealing of the ATM, malefactors will have no information necessary for penetration into infrastructure of bank. Resistance to cracking is confirmed with pentests.

Our system allows to permit these contradictions. When we decided to create the ATM network, we had a task to provide completely remote control of devices. We met the existing practicians in the industry, consulted with colleagues on the bank industry and understood that similar was not yet. Nobody did — and we made the first. We selected SafenSoft as the partner because we looked for the company which has similar experience of development and deployment of this product from scratch, understands specifics of restrictions in such projects and will be able quickly to find solutions for the arising tasks which it did not face earlier,

It is pleasant that Tinkoff implements advanced technologies and is ready to tell about this experience. Certainly, this system will be able to increase security of ATMs in all industry. This project was difficult. Requirements of bank seemed to us exigeant. It was necessary to consider all requirements of the Bank of Russia within one system and to carry out Tinkoff tasks: for example, to make so that the software was updated several times a week, but so that process did not interrupt operation of the device.
