2019: Start
On December 10, 2019 IBM announced start of the AiMOS supercomputer (Artificial Intelligence Multiprocessing Optimized System) which will be used for creation of new computers. A system was located in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Performance of AiMOS is 8 petaFLOPS (one quadrillion calculations per second) that does this supercomputer to the most powerful among all, set ever at the private university. Also he took the 24th place in the world ranking of Top 500 which is updated twice a year.
The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute intends to use AiMOS for development of new chips and the computing equipment which can be used to accomplishment of the tasks connected with artificial intelligence.
Our common goal — to increase efficiency of the systems of artificial intelligence by 1000 times within the next decade … Fully to implement AI potential, there is a new generation of the computing equipment intended for specific tasks — the executive vice president of IBM John Kelly said. |
According to the SiliconANGLE edition as AI algorithms become harder and harder, hardware platforms at which they work also should be much more powerful effectively to process these algorithms. Possibilities of AiMOS will be used for improvement of graphic and central processors and also hardware accelerators. IBM is going to give support in development of such equipment.
Besides, AiMOS will be used in other projects of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Among them — an initiative of monitoring of the environment within which annually from sensors more than 9 Tbyte of data gather.[1]
