2019: Announcement
In the middle of December, 2019 United Imaging Healthcare provided the MPT 3T new system with the wide tunnel intended for patients with obesity and claustrophobia.
The new scanner called uMR Omega has the widest opening with a diameter of 75 cm. It is supposed that the ultrawide tunnel will allow to carry out MR-diagnostics of patients with a wide shoulder belt or obesity which often cannot receive due inspection because of too small size of an opening, low capacity of a table and insufficient opportunities of the scanner in general.
The prevalence of obesity in the USA by the end of 2019 approaches 40% though in 2005-2012 made 34–35%. Persons with very high degree of obesity make 8% of all population, and this share continues to grow. At the same time, by estimates of network of health care, 5-7% of the population suffer from claustrophobia which does not allow them to undergo full diagnostics as narrow tunnels of MR-scanners cause in them the expressed concern.
The uMR Omega MRT-scanner is equipped not only an ultrawide tunnel, but also a table with the increased loading capacity (up to 308 kg). The general construction was developed after consultations with the doctors and other medics helping patients with obesity. Besides, the scanner is supplied with applications which allow to improve quality of pictures on the periphery that is especially important at defeat localization, remote from the center. The latest technologies allow to expand a field of shooting of the normal MR-scanner from 50x50x50 cm to 60x60x50 cm thanks to high uniformity of magnets of the uMR Omega scanner and its 70-centimeter coil.
It is expected that in addition to patients with obesity and claustrophobia this system will become an optimal variant for inspection of expectant mothers and also uneasy children who will be able to undergo inspection together with mothers.[1]
