Biography

2019: Imprisonment for cyber attack to Jet2

In December, 2019 27-year-old Scott Byorns was sentenced to 10 months of prison for cyber attack to the British airline Jet2. He pled guilty on eight counts according to the law on unauthorized use of computers.

Scott Byorns worked as the IT specialist in Blue Chip Data Systems, it had a working account through which it provided to Jet2 technical support. In February, 2017 Byorns went to Benidorm to ensure information security during the road show.  In the documents read in the courtroom it is told that the defendant tried to return to hotel twice, but refused to it entrance. In response to failure he hacked a telephone network and lay to the concierge that he is the director of Jet2. After the employee of the company punished, but on it he did not stop.

In December, 2017 the working account Byorns was disconnected, however it got into Jet2 network, using an office account of the printer in the domain of internal network. Scott Byorns could open a session of a remote desktop at the beginning of January, 2018 and two weeks later at personnel of the company technical failures began. The matter is that the hacker deleted the folder with important information: he erased all entries in the domain of Jet2, including accounts of domain administrators without which it is impossible to eliminate damage.

Burns also purposefully deleted magazines, trying to hide the traces. Using illegal access, he logged in the personal account of e-mail of the CEO of Dart Group Steve Hipi. He did not manage to make it completely and the police using the IP address traced the account of Virgin Media registered addressed to the former employee of the company.

According to the experts, the bag of the caused damage the IT specialist makes $215 thousand. The notebook and personal belongings of Scott Burns were withdrawn and destroyed, and the defendant went to colony where will serve a half of imprisonment and a half conditionally.[1]
