S-Pod (electric chair)

2019: Announcement

At the beginning of January, 2020 Segway presented the new S-Pod vehicle in the form of the electric wheel chair intended for movement on campuses, theme parks, the airports and, perhaps, even on city streets.

S-Pod is equipped with technology of preserving of balance on the basis of a gyroscope. Unlike normal giroskuter of Segway, S-Pod is controlled not inclinations of the body of the user, and using the small joystick located to the right of a seat. Segway claims that the chair is capable to keep balance at the most difficult turns, and a steering system with two wheels allows to change quickly the direction even at a stop. Three more small wheels allow to move a chair at the switched-off motors. Developers claim that the electric chair is capable to disperse up to 38 km/h. It is known also that S-Pod weighs 150 kg and is capable to pass without recharge to 70 km.

It is supposed that S-Pod will be able to replace a part of cars in the large cities. Transition to the similar type of transport will allow to reduce significantly emissions of noxious gases in the atmosphere, to reduce traffic jams and number of accidents at the expense of lower speed of this transport. Besides, S-Pod can be used for excursion groups which so far, as a rule, move in electric golf penalties and also to become convenient option of movement for people who cannot or do not wish to stand for a long time.

The company reported that S-Pod will be presented at exhibitions in the third quarter 2020 and will go on sale in the 2021st. The electrochair price at the time of the announcement is unknown. In addition to S-Pod, the Segway company intends to provide a new line of electric motor scooters and mopeds and also electronic scooters with a system a cruise control.^[1]
