2020: Announcement
In the middle of February, 2020 the German chemical concern BASF provided a pilot blockchain project on plastic reciChain processing. The new pilot is started in the Canadian province after earlier project in Brazil.
The research of Deloitte showed that in 2016 Canada produced 3.3 million tons of plastic waste from which only 11% were processed. BASF offers new approach to processing process which includes a series of the scanned icons which will help processors with mechanical sorting of collected plastic.
Producers of original polymer will implement in it a digital icon which allows to identify ingredients. Producers of final goods will probably use both primary, and secondary plastic and these icons as required will include. Collectors of waste will be able mechanically to sort plastic by types of polymers by scanning of icons. The processed materials will break into plastic granules and to go to reuse, and the cycle timer will trace a koliyechstvo of cycles of processing.
The blockchain is used for safe data exchange from digital icons among market participants. Owners of brands rely on certificates of utilization, but the blockchain allows to increase transparency of transactions and assessment of validity period of these certificates. Successful implementation of reciChain will create joint digital consortium which will integrate producers, suppliers, the government organizations, retail dealers, collectors of waste and processors of plastic.
However, BASF concern not the first company using a blockchain for processing of plastic. Owners of notebooks of Dell estimate origin of the processed materials using a blockchain of VMware, and PlasticBank uses tokens for stimulation of collecting of plastic.[1]
