2020: New York allowed to marry via video link

On April 18, 2020, the governor of the US state of New York, Andrew Cuomo, signed an order allowing remote marriage after couples planning a wedding were forced to postpone events due to strict quarantine rules for COVID-19.

The decree allows people to receive marriage certificates via the Internet, and clerical employees to conduct marriage ceremonies via video link. Thus, the document temporarily cancels the law, in which the marriage required the personal presence of the bride and groom, or at least one of them.

According to the governor, due to the coronavirus COVID-19, the number of divorces in the state has increased, but weddings have become rare. At the same time, Cuomo did not provide accurate data on these indicators. Many marriage registration offices in April 2020 are temporarily closed as a result of the pandemic. This prevented New Yorkers from obtaining a marriage certificate.

Online registration is not only available in New York. In March 2020, such a service was launched in Indonesia, and in April - in the UAE.

According to the New York Daily News, 406 wedding ceremonies were performed in Manhattan and 878 throughout the city a week before the quarantine - more than in the same week in 2019.
