Biography

Was born on September 13, 1964 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

The grandmother from family of hereditary priests. Parents is geologists, spent the childhood in Kazakhstan. The father in the 60th years opened "40 years for KAZSSR" and Voskhod — the fields of chromites, largest in the CIS, what received different government awards for and entered different encyclopedias.

1977-1981 - Republican physical and mathematical school (RFMSh, Alma-Ata, USSR).

Without having got to the university where we treated Arkady together, we dispersed. "Years since 1990 there was strongly a feeling that it is necessary to do something else. Fortunately, it was not necessary to look for long, Arkady by this moment already founded firm, specially under Borkovsky who already had by then behind shoulders a spell-cheker, the dictionary Gin, and I booze all.

Hopes the Arcadia were not equaled, Borkovsky went to America, but children who remained (one of them in Boston the programmer now, and other Cisco Russia) made the excellent program with a full text morfologichesikm search. For 1990 it, probably, there was a record. I began to earn additionally at them, doing distribution kits, testing, and, even, wrote an installer (rewrote texts of Volozha more precisely) and the demo video. On sale of this product in 1991 it was possible to live, feed 5-10 people and even in the spring of 1992 to go to Apresyan and Boguslavsky and to receive at them the qualitative dictionary.

Then money came to an end, and production of the morphology was absolutely difficult case. The first version on the new dictionary (any line of Borkovsky) worked with speed of 3 words per second. And only, having glanced in books, in the spring of 1993 I wrote a morforazbor which kept 100 thousand Russian words in 300 kilobytes of a base memory and worked with speed of 1000 words per second on those still computers.

At last there was an opportunity to make a fast indexer that is called "for the end user". And fall of the same year, approximately, the first Yandex program appeared. All that year I was, in fact, the only programmer in office which was engaged in sale of computers because programs somehow not really were on sale. (local search, in general, very few people then interested).

But instead of doing unclear to whom the necessary search systems, decided to go on the blazed way and to release the "closed" system with morfopoisky. So there was "Bible". More precisely Bible Computer Reference book. The program under Windows. We made it already together, Arkady took me the interface programmer in help. To year in 1994 we slowly sold it and completed, and 1995 it were seen by people from the Information registry and passed to us from the former suppliers of technology (Parkhomenko). So we received the big order for Griboyedov.

While it was done, took still programmers, CompTek moved to office with the Internet, and all understood that it is necessary to do urgently search for the Internet. It was the end of 1995 — the beginning of 1996.

In the spring of 1996 the morphology on the "closed" dictionary ceased suit all. For one simple reason: in the Bible — 40 percent of words not dictionary, and on the Internet and that are more (if to measure according to the dictionary).

Having listened to several caustic reproaches (here like, how many years you are engaged in it, and for people made nothing good), I terribly became angry about myself and created for quite short term the "open" dictionary, approximately what now works in Yandex".

2013: Death from cancer

On July 25, 2013 Ilya Segalovich at the age of 48 years died. Segalovich's death came from unexpected complications of cancer of the stomach which up to this point was well responding to treatment. The CEO of the company Arkady Volozh published entry in the corporate blog:

"We were on friendly terms with Ilyusha from school, four years shared the same desk. And then together did Yandex. Tonight he died. Everything happened too quickly and unexpectedly.

The last time he addressed our Istanbul children last Thursday. He left and told: "Hello, my name is Ilya". All laughed, and he told about the search Islands platform.

On the same day it became clear that Segalovich was connected to the device of artificial life support in one of the London clinics.

On July 27 in the afternoon Ilya Segalovich died. As the CEO of "Yandex" and the co-founder of the company Arkady Volozh explained in the official blog of the company, on July 25 at 1:30 a.m. Moscow time at Segalovich brain death was recorded.

"Death of a brain and lack of breath is a modern technical determination of death. Today's medical technologies give the chance to keep a body some more days on artificial respiration. But this irrevocable status", - explained to Volozh.

The diagnosis "terminal cancer of a stomach with metastases", according to Volozha, was delivered to Segalovich in September of last year.

"Last week the tumor in the head was detected. On Tuesday-Wednesday cancer was thrown on brain covers. Malignant meningitis led to irreversible effects - his brain "burned down" less, than per day", - wrote Volozh in the blog of the company.
