Robert Norton Noys

Robert Norton Noyce is the American engineer, the inventor of the integrated circuit and the system of the interconnected transistors on a uniform silicon plate. Together with the colleague Gordon Moore with whom they together worked in Fairchild Semiconductor founded Intel company.

Was born on December 12, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa (USA). Texas (USA) died on June 3, 1990 in Austin.

Biography, career

In 1949 Noys graduated from Grinnell-college in Iowa with the bachelor's degree. In 1953 he became the doctor of philosophy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1956 got to work in semiconductor laboratory of William Shokli, and then together with seven colleagues left and founded one of the first electronic firms on production of silicon Fairchild Semiconductor semiconductors. At the same time, but independently of each other Noys and Kilbi invented an integrated microcircuit.

In 1968 Noys and his old colleague Gordon Moore founded Intel corporation, having left the prospering company. Two years later they created the memorable chip from silicon and polysilicon which replaced with itself former ineffective ceramic cores in memory devices of computers. In 1988 Noys became the president of Sematech corporation, the research consortium jointly financed by the industrial capital and the U.S. Government for the purpose of development of advanced technologies in the American semiconductor industry.
