2020: Start of service
On April 6, 2020 announced Amazon a project startup, Amazon Web Services (AWS) intended for transfer of large Windows infrastructures in a cloud. The initiative of the American online retailer received the name Migration Acceleration Program for Windows.
Service was available in the form of the preliminary version since December, 2019 when its announcement at the AWS re conference took place: Invent 2019. In April of the 2020th it became available with a full range of functions for all comers.
Migration Acceleration Program for Windows is intended for the help to clients in implementation of large-scale projects on transfer of workloads on the basis of Windows in infrastructure of AWS. Within service such services as providing the normative guide at data migration are available, consultations with experts of AWS, training and payments of compensations for use of a product.
Besides, the new solution is designed to help customers to cut down expenses on licensing thanks to implementation of cloud computing and technologies open source.
The CEO of AWS Andy Dzhassi criticized Microsoft for its practice of licensing, having said that the company limits possibilities of business on deployment of Windows and Windows SQL Server in a cloud environment.
Work of Migration Acceleration Program for Windows is constructed at three main stages:
- assessment of readiness of infrastructure for transfer on Amazon Web Services;
- the beginning of mobilization which purpose is elimination of the problems revealed during initial project evaluation;
- the actual transfer of applications and data performed by means of a team of experts of Amazon ProServe and participants of a partner network of Amazon (Amazon Partner Network).
Amazon considers that service will be very demanded among the companies as, according to IDC, in AWS twice more Windows Server virtual machines, than in Microsoft Azure cloud are placed.[1]
