2020: Release of SDK
On April 6, 2020 Google released the SDK tools for implementation of peripheral calculations in the smart house. Thanks to a set of Local Home SDK equipment manufacturers will be able to improve reliability and speed of a response to commands of the products.
Devices for the systems of the smart house, such as smart kitchen equipment, are often connected to cloud services for accomplishment of tasks. Such scheme helps producers to reduce costs on production of devices and at the same time to maintain their functionality at the high level.
However there are also some shortcomings. The equipment cannot be connected to a cloud without Internet connections which at the same time should be stable and fast to avoid delays when processing commands.
Local Home SDK reduces dependence of devices on cloud computing. It allows producers to transfer processing of tasks from the gadgets, for example, to smart columns with support Google Assistant or smart displays which are installed in houses.
Thanks to Local Home SDK on devices with Google Assistant it is possible to start special local (without connection to the Internet) the JavaScript-applications performing work which was connected with cloud services earlier.
As data should pass only through a local network, delays decrease. Tools also allow developers to guarantee that crucial functions of the equipment remain available even in the absence of connection to the Internet.
Consumers will not need to turn on specially this function on the devices, but equipment manufacturers should get approval from Google before they are able to release local applications through Local Home SDK.
The applications started on devices with Google Assistant can contact the equipment through the mDNS, UDP or UPnP protocols.[1]
