OnePlus 8 Pro camera shines through objects

In mid-May 2020, it became known that the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone uses infrared sensors that allow you to see through some items. This feature has not previously been announced in any marketing material from the manufacturer.

To do this, open the OnePlus 8 Pro camera application, turn on the Photochrom color filter and point the smartphone at any black objects. The filter only works on very thin black plastic, glass or fabric, fixing infrared radiation invisible to the naked eye. User Unbox Therapy posted a video where he used a filter on an Apple TV case, a Switch remote control and even a thin black T-shirt.

Infrared radiation captured by the camera is directly behind the visible fragment of the electromagnetic spectrum, and it is sometimes called thermal radiation because that is how we feel its effects. Special types of equipment can capture infrared radiation, including night vision goggles and thermal imaging cameras. They allow you to penetrate through certain materials with your eyes, since infrared waves, unlike waves of the visible spectrum, pass through them. Firefighters, for example, use infrared cameras to see through smoke in burning buildings.

The owners of the OnePlus 8 Pro unexpectedly discovered an X-ray mode in the camera. He can see through some objects

Infrared sensors are not only used in the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone. For example, the TrueDepth camera on the latest iPhones uses infrared light to scan the face to identify the user, and hackers can hack it to turn it into the same image filter as on the OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone.

In addition to thin plastic, the OnePlus 8 Pro camera is able to shine through some liquids, display inscriptions on the back of photo cards, show inscriptions hidden under a thin fabric. It is not yet known if OnePlus will have privacy concerns if the filter is used to shine through clothes. Depending on the severity of the issue, OnePlus may restrict the feature by upgrading the software.[1]

The OnePlus 8 has neither wireless charging nor water protection, making it even more like its predecessor.
